If you run marathons, hike mountains, swim in open water or just want the toughest smartwatch you can buy, two watches stand above the rest in 2026: the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. Both have rugged titanium builds, sapphire crystal screens, dual frequency GPS and satellite features for emergencies.
The5KRunner summed up the choice nicely: the decision is simpler than the spec sheets suggest. The Fenix 9 offers far longer battery life and most sports features built in. The Ultra 4 is the better everyday smartwatch, it is easier to use, and it needs an iPhone.
Quick verdict
Choose the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro if battery life, offline maps, multisport training and detailed recovery data matter most to you, or if you use an Android phone.
Choose the Apple Watch Ultra 4 if you have an iPhone and want one watch that is great for both training and daily life, with cellular, apps and Apple Pay.

Battery life: Garmin’s biggest advantage
This is the clearest difference between these watches. According to Tom’s Guide, the Fenix 9 Pro lasts up to 10 days as a smartwatch in the 43mm size, 18 days in the 47mm and an incredible 31 days in the 51mm. In multiband GPS mode, it tracks for up to 18, 32 or 56 hours depending on size. The 51mm model can go even further in Garmin’s max battery modes.
Apple made a big jump this year. The Ultra 4 is now rated for up to 50 hours of normal use, up from 42 hours on the Ultra 3, and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. GPS workouts last up to 18 hours in the most accurate mode. GearUpToFit called it the moment the two day barrier finally fell for Apple.
That is a great improvement, but if you go on multiday hikes or ultra races, Garmin is still in a different league. You can leave on a week long trip with a Fenix and never pack a charger.
Winner: Garmin Fenix 9 Pro, by a wide margin.
GPS and heart rate accuracy
Both watches use dual frequency GPS, and both perform very well. Tom’s Guide tested last year’s models side by side during a marathon and found both accurate. For most runners, either watch will give you reliable distance and pace data.
Apple says the Ultra 4 uses the new Health Sensing System shared with the Series 12, and early reviewers praised its heart rate sensor. Garmin’s Elevate sensors are also excellent, and many serious athletes pair either watch with a chest strap for interval training anyway.
Winner: Tie.
Training and recovery features
Garmin has spent years building one of the deepest training platforms on any watch. The5KRunner noted that the Fenix 9 ships with eight named training and recovery metrics built in, plus tools like PacePro for race pacing and critical swim speed. You also get full offline topographic maps, turn by turn navigation, and detailed training load and readiness scores without installing anything.
Apple keeps it simpler. The Ultra 4 introduces a Readiness score that gives you one number from 0 to 10 with a plain recommendation for the day. GearUpToFit noted the Readiness feature had some teething problems at launch, and that random restart bugs were fixed in watchOS 27.0.1. For advanced features like detailed maps during workouts, many Ultra owners use third party apps such as WorkOutDoors.
Winner: Garmin Fenix 9 Pro for serious athletes, Apple Watch Ultra 4 for simplicity.
Smart features
This is where Apple shines. The Ultra 4 has built in cellular and satellite communication, Apple Pay, Siri, thousands of apps, and deep integration with the iPhone. You can reply to messages, take calls and stream music without your phone. The5KRunner pointed out that Apple’s own apps get deeper watchOS access than any third party, Garmin included.
The Fenix 9 Pro has notifications, Garmin Pay, music storage and a built in flashlight, which Tom’s Guide’s reviewer called invaluable. Pro models also offer Garmin’s inReach satellite messaging. But its app store and smart features are far more limited than Apple’s.
Winner: Apple Watch Ultra 4.
Design and comfort
The Ultra 4 keeps last year’s 49mm titanium design and weighs 63g. It is big but balanced, and its large Action Button is great for starting workouts with gloves on.
Garmin gives you more choice with three case sizes. The smaller 43mm model suits smaller wrists, while the 51mm version is a true expedition watch at around 99g. If you find big watches uncomfortable for sleep tracking, the smaller Fenix or the Ultra might be better options.
Price
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799, the same price as the Ultra 3. The Garmin Fenix 9 Pro costs more, with the 51mm model listed at around $1,299.99, and Tom’s Guide noted the Ultra 4 is about $400 cheaper than a Fenix 9 Pro with inReach.
Winner: Apple Watch Ultra 4.
