Not everyone needs a top of the line iPad Pro or a giant Galaxy Tab Ultra. For most people, the sweet spot is a tablet that is powerful, light, works with a pen and keyboard, and does not cost a fortune. In 2026 that usually means choosing between the Apple iPad Air with M4 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11.

Both are 11 inch tablets with 12GB of RAM, but they are very different once you start using them. Here is how they compare.

Quick verdict

Choose the iPad Air M4 if you want the fastest chip, the best tablet apps, and smooth integration with an iPhone or Mac.

Choose the Galaxy Tab S11 if you want the better screen, a stylus included in the box, expandable storage and a desktop mode for multitasking.

Display: Samsung wins clearly

This is the biggest difference between the two tablets. The Galaxy Tab S11 has a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel running at 120Hz. Colors pop, blacks are truly black, and scrolling and handwriting feel buttery smooth.

The iPad Air M4 still uses a 60Hz LCD. It is sharp, bright and very color accurate, but once you have used a 120Hz screen, 60Hz feels a little choppy. Apple keeps its ProMotion 120Hz and OLED screens for the more expensive iPad Pro.

If you watch a lot of Netflix and YouTube, or write a lot with a stylus, the Samsung screen is simply nicer to look at every day.

Winner: Galaxy Tab S11.

Performance: the M4 is overkill in a good way

Apple’s M4 is the same class of chip you find in Mac laptops. It handles video editing in LumaFusion or Final Cut for iPad, heavy photo editing, music production and even console quality games like Resident Evil Village with ease. A Turkish tech site summed it up simply: the M4 wins for gaming and performance.

The Dimensity 9400+ in the Tab S11 is a flagship phone chip and is still very fast. Everyday tasks, Android games, note taking and streaming all run smoothly. But in pure power and pro app support, the iPad is ahead.

Winner: iPad Air M4.

Stylus and note taking

Samsung includes the S Pen in the box, and it never needs charging. It is great for handwriting notes, marking up PDFs and sketching. Samsung Notes is also one of the best free note apps on any platform.

The iPad Air supports the Apple Pencil Pro, which adds squeeze gestures, barrel roll and haptic feedback. Paired with apps like GoodNotes, Notability and Procreate, it is the best tablet drawing and note setup available. The downside is cost: the Pencil Pro was listed at $129 in the US, on top of the tablet price.

Winner: Tie. Samsung offers better value, Apple offers the better app ecosystem for artists.

Software and multitasking

iPadOS 26 was a huge update. It added real resizable windows, a menu bar and much better file handling, which makes the iPad Air feel more like a laptop than ever when you attach a keyboard. The iPad also has the best selection of apps designed specifically for tablets.

Samsung counters with DeX, a desktop mode that turns the Tab S11 into something close to a mini PC, complete with a taskbar and floating windows. Android tablet apps have improved a lot, but some still feel like stretched phone apps. On the plus side, Samsung lists security support for the Tab S11 until September 30, 2032, so it will stay updated for a long time.

Winner: iPad Air M4, mainly thanks to its app library.

Battery and charging

Samsung rates the Tab S11 for up to 18 hours of video playback from its 8,400mAh battery, and it supports 45W fast charging. Apple rates the iPad Air for up to 10 hours of web browsing or video on WiFi. In ITPro’s HD video rundown test, the Tab S11 lasted 14 hours and 11 minutes, so the real world gap is smaller than the official ratings suggest. Both easily last a full day of school or work, but the Samsung charges faster. Note that Samsung does not include a charger in the box.

Winner: Galaxy Tab S11.

Storage and value

Both tablets start at 128GB. The Galaxy Tab S11 supports microSD cards, so you can add cheap storage later for movies and files. The iPad Air does not, so you need to pick the right storage size upfront.

Price is where things changed most in 2026. The iPad Air M4 launched in March at the same $599 as the M3 model, but Apple raised prices across its iPad lineup in June because of the global memory shortage. The 11 inch WiFi model now starts at $749, and the WiFi plus Cellular version at $899. The Galaxy Tab S11 launched at $799.99 for 128GB in the US. Once you add the $129 Pencil Pro, the iPad setup gets expensive fast. The Samsung, with its included S Pen, often works out cheaper overall, and Samsung tablets are discounted frequently.

Winner: Galaxy Tab S11.

  • You use an Android phone, especially a Samsung

What People Are Saying

Beyond professional reviews, we looked at what owners and buyers are discussing on GSMArena, Slickdeals and Best Buy, along with price tracking data. These are opinions from real users, not lab tests, so treat them as extra context rather than hard facts.

Tab S11 owners rate it highly, but many wait for deals

The Galaxy Tab S11 holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating from Best Buy buyers, with owners often praising its size. (Source) In GSMArena’s user reviews, the most common complaint is simply that it is very pricey. (Source)

That is why deal hunters on Slickdeals jumped on Samsung’s education and employee pricing, which brought the 128GB model down to around $552. One commenter in that thread also flagged a Reddit discussion about video codec and encoder problems that Samsung, MediaTek and Nvidia had not responded to, with only Xbox saying it would look into it. That is worth checking if you plan to use game streaming apps. (Source)

The iPad price increase changed the value math

The iPad Air M4 got good marks for keeping its $599 price at launch, but Apple’s June price increase changed the conversation. Retailer discounts have become the main way buyers avoid paying the new $749 list price, and price trackers have shown the cellular model selling below list at times. (Source)

The common advice

Forum users mostly agree. If you already own an iPhone or Mac, or need specific iPad apps like Procreate, the iPad Air is worth it, ideally bought on sale. If you want the better screen and an included pen, the Tab S11 is the better value, especially with Samsung’s frequent discounts.
