If you edit video, design, produce music or do 3D work, a 14 inch laptop is the sweet spot. It is small enough to carry every day and powerful enough to replace a desktop. In 2026, two machines dominate this space: Apple’s 14 inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and ASUS’s ROG Zephyrus G14 (2026).
They weigh almost the same and cost a similar amount once configured, but they are built on totally different ideas. Apple focuses on efficiency, battery life and a reference grade display. ASUS stuffs a powerful NVIDIA graphics card into a slim aluminium body for maximum speed in GPU heavy work and gaming.
Quick verdict
Choose the MacBook Pro M5 Pro if you edit video or photos, work in Final Cut Pro, Logic or the Adobe apps, and want full performance on battery with all day runtime.
Choose the ROG Zephyrus G14 if your work relies on NVIDIA’s CUDA (Blender, many AI tools, some 3D renderers), or you also want a serious gaming laptop.

Design and portability
These two laptops are surprisingly close in size. Both sit right around 1.5 to 1.6 kg, and both are thin enough to slide into any backpack. The MacBook Pro has Apple’s familiar solid aluminium design in Space Black or Silver. The 2026 Zephyrus G14 has a slim magnesium alloy chassis and is still one of the most premium looking Windows laptops around.
The biggest practical difference is noise. Notebookcheck listed loud fans as one of the G14’s main drawbacks. The MacBook Pro stays quiet for most tasks and only becomes audible under sustained heavy loads.
Display
Both laptops have outstanding screens, but they suit different people.
The MacBook Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR is a Mini LED panel with very high HDR brightness and reference modes that colorists and photographers trust. TechRadar called it one of the best displays on a laptop. If you grade HDR video, it is hard to beat.
The G14 uses a 2.8K OLED at 120Hz with G Sync and ROG Nebula HDR. Notebookcheck said the 2026 model got a brighter OLED than before. OLED gives perfect blacks and very fast response times, which makes it fantastic for gaming and movies. It also covers a wide color range for design work.
Winner: MacBook Pro for color critical HDR work, Zephyrus G14 for gaming and contrast.
Performance for creative work
The M5 Pro is a big step up. It comes with up to 18 CPU cores, including Apple’s new “super cores,” and up to 20 GPU cores that each have a Neural Accelerator built in for AI tasks. Apple chips also perform the same whether plugged in or running on battery, which is a huge deal if you edit on location. In Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Lightroom and Logic Pro, the M5 Pro is extremely fast, and its media engines handle ProRes and HEVC footage with ease.
The Zephyrus G14’s ace is its RTX 5070 Ti running at 115W. Notebookcheck called it still the most powerful 14 inch gaming laptop, and the only compact laptop of its kind available with the RTX 5070 Ti. In apps that use NVIDIA’s CUDA or OptiX, like Blender, Redshift, Octane and many local AI tools, the G14 can finish GPU renders much faster than the Mac. Intel’s new Panther Lake Core Ultra 9 386H also gives it strong CPU performance and better efficiency than older G14 models.
The catch is that Windows laptops with discrete GPUs lose a lot of performance when unplugged, so the G14 is at its best on the wall outlet.
Winner: MacBook Pro for video and photo editing on the go, Zephyrus G14 for 3D rendering and GPU compute.
Gaming
This one is not close. The Zephyrus G14 with an RTX 5070 Ti plays modern AAA games at high settings, supports DLSS 4 frame generation, and has a 120Hz OLED with G Sync. The MacBook Pro can play a growing list of Mac native games, but the library is still tiny compared to Windows, and many popular multiplayer titles do not run on macOS at all.
Winner: Zephyrus G14.
Battery life
Apple rates the 14 inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro for up to 22 hours of video streaming and 14 hours of web browsing, and in Tom’s Guide’s web surfing test it lasted 21 hours and 10 minutes. ASUS claims up to about 14 hours for the G14 in light use, and Notebookcheck noted improved runtimes on the 2026 model, but once the RTX GPU kicks in, you will be reaching for the charger much sooner.
Winner: MacBook Pro, by a mile.
Ports
The MacBook Pro has three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, a headphone jack and MagSafe charging. Photographers will love the SD slot. The Intel based 2026 G14 adds Thunderbolt 4 and, according to The Verge, a full size SD card slot, alongside USB A, HDMI, WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. It does not have Thunderbolt 5.
Price and value
The 14 inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro launched at $2,199, but Apple raised all MacBook Pro prices by $300 in June 2026 because of the memory shortage, so it now starts at $2,499 (retailers like Amazon often sell it for less). The 2026 Zephyrus G14 with RTX 5070 Ti was listed at $3,199 at Best Buy and $3,599 on the ASUS store in the US, which is roughly $1,000 more than the previous generation with the same GPU. Notebookcheck pointed out that the 2025 G14 is still a very good option for about $600 less.
If you do not need the extra power, the base M5 MacBook Pro, now $1,999 with 1TB of storage, is also worth a look.
Which should you buy?
Get the MacBook Pro M5 Pro if you are a video editor, photographer, music producer or developer who wants long battery life, a world class display and the same speed on battery as plugged in.
Get the ROG Zephyrus G14 (2026) if you are a 3D artist, AI developer or creator who also games, and you need NVIDIA graphics in the smallest possible package.
What People Are Saying
Beyond professional reviews, we looked at what buyers are discussing on MacRumors, Slickdeals and retailer review pages. These are opinions and impressions from real users, not lab tests, so treat them as extra context rather than hard facts.
Price is the biggest talking point for both
Apple’s June price increase is the main topic among Mac buyers. In MacRumors comments, one M5 Max owner said they bought just hours before the new prices kicked in and saved a lot of money, while others pointed out that third party retailers like Best Buy and Amazon became the best place to buy because they kept older pricing for a while. On the ASUS side, the 2026 G14’s higher price pushed many deal hunters towards last year’s model. Slickdeals users have been sharing open box deals on the 2025 G14 with the same RTX 5070 Ti for well under the price of the new one. (Source)
G14 owners love the size to power ratio
Owner reviews on Best Buy for the RTX 5070 Ti G14 are very positive, with one buyer upgrading from an older RTX 3070 Ti gaming laptop calling the difference night and day. Keep in mind some of those reviewers received promotional considerations. (Source)
The common advice
Across these discussions, the advice is simple. If you are a Mac based editor, buy the MacBook Pro, ideally from a retailer running a discount. If you need NVIDIA GPU power or want to game, the G14 is still the best 14 inch option, but the 2025 model is worth a serious look if the 2026 price is too high.
