Buying a Windows laptop in 2026 means making a choice that did not really exist a few years ago. On one side you have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite, an Arm based chip that promises huge battery life and fast performance. On the other side you have Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3, better known by its code name Panther Lake, which brings big efficiency gains and much stronger built in graphics to classic x86 Windows.
Both chips are found in some of the best laptops of the year. So which one should you look for on the spec sheet? Here is a plain English breakdown.
The short answer
- Pick Snapdragon X2 Elite if you mostly use a browser, Office, Teams, Zoom and modern apps, and you care most about battery life, quiet operation and AI features.
- Pick Intel Panther Lake if you play games, use older or specialized Windows software, need certain drivers or anti cheat games, or just want zero compatibility worries.
Quick comparison
| Category | Snapdragon X2 Elite | Intel Panther Lake |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Arm (Windows on Arm) | x86 |
| Manufacturing | 3nm | Intel 18A |
| CPU cores (top chip) | Up to 18 cores, up to 5GHz | Up to 16 cores in Core Ultra X7 and X9 |
| NPU for AI | Up to 80 TOPS | Strong, but trails Qualcomm in quantized AI tests |
| Integrated graphics | Adreno, good but weaker for games | Arc B390 on top chips, the strongest iGPU here |
| Performance on battery | Stays close to plugged in speed | Can drop noticeably on many laptops |
| App compatibility | Very good and improving, some gaps | Everything just works |
CPU performance
Qualcomm’s second generation chip is genuinely fast. HotHardware found that ASUS and HP laptops with the Snapdragon X2 Elite outpaced every other thin and light laptop it tested, with only a gaming laptop with a discrete graphics card running faster. Tech reviewers have also reported benchmark results where the top X2 Elite Extreme beats Intel’s flagship Panther Lake chip, the Core Ultra X9 388H.
Independent testing commissioned through Signal65 found the standard 18 core X2 Elite led Intel and AMD in CPU, AI, productivity and most battery tests in premium 14 inch laptops. Keep in mind that Qualcomm worked with Signal65 on these tests, but the results line up with what other reviewers have seen.
Panther Lake is no pushover though. Tom’s Guide said the silicon war was already hot thanks to Panther Lake’s impressive performance and efficiency. In everyday tasks like browsing, documents and light photo editing, you will not notice much of a difference between the two.
Battery life
This is where things get interesting, because Intel has closed the gap a lot.
Qualcomm chips have a unique advantage: they deliver almost the same performance unplugged as plugged in. Digital Citizen reported the Snapdragon system kept about 97% of its plugged in performance on battery. Many Intel and AMD laptops scale back much more on battery to save power.
In a direct test of two ultralight laptops under 1kg, the Snapdragon X2 Elite ASUS Zenbook A14 lasted 16 hours on WiFi compared to 12 hours for the Panther Lake MSI Prestige 13 AI+.
But Panther Lake laptops can be amazing too. Tom’s Guide measured 21 hours and 20 minutes on a Dell XPS 14 with the Core Ultra 7 355 and a 1200p LCD screen, although the OLED version with a faster Core Ultra X7 lasted about 12 and a half hours. Screen type, brightness and battery size matter a lot here, so always check reviews of the specific laptop rather than just the chip.
Winner: Snapdragon X2 Elite, but by a smaller margin than last generation.
Graphics and gaming
Intel clearly wins here. Panther Lake’s integrated Arc B390 graphics are the strongest you can get without a separate graphics card. In early Hardware Canucks testing reported by Technobezz, Panther Lake hit 189 fps in Counter Strike 2 at 1200p High settings, while the Snapdragon X2 managed 112 fps.
Gaming on Arm has improved a lot. Fortnite now runs natively with Easy Anti Cheat, and Qualcomm has shipped fixes for over 100 games, according to Tom’s Guide. But some popular titles still do not run, especially games whose kernel level anti cheat has no Arm64 support yet, such as Valorant, PUBG and Battlefield 6. If gaming matters to you at all, Intel is the safer pick. Every review we read agreed that integrated graphics remain Intel’s strongest advantage.
Winner: Intel Panther Lake.
AI features
Both chips run Microsoft’s Copilot+ features, like live captions, image generation and Recall. Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU is rated up to 80 TOPS, and HotHardware found it beat Intel’s Core Ultra X9 by a wide margin in quantized AI benchmarks. Intel’s NPU came close in some other AI tests. For most people, both are more than enough for the AI features currently built into Windows.
Winner: Snapdragon X2 Elite.
App compatibility
This is still the biggest question with Snapdragon laptops. Windows on Arm runs most modern apps natively, including Chrome, Edge, Microsoft Office, Teams, Zoom, Spotify, Photoshop and many more. Apps that are not built for Arm run through Microsoft’s emulation layer, which works well for most software.
The problem areas are older business software, some printer and scanner drivers, specialized engineering tools, VPN clients and certain games. Analytics Insight summed it up well: Qualcomm focuses on efficiency and battery life, while Intel’s x86 platform offers broad software compatibility and strong graphics.
Winner: Intel Panther Lake.
Price
Windows Central reported that Qualcomm is not only delivering strong performance and battery life, but also delivering laptops at a better price than the competition in its tested category. That said, laptop prices vary hugely by brand, screen and memory, so compare complete laptops, not just chips.
Who should buy which?
Buy a Snapdragon X2 Elite laptop if:
- You are a student or office worker who lives in a browser and Microsoft 365
- You want the longest battery life and work away from a charger often
- You want a quiet, cool laptop that does not slow down on battery
Buy an Intel Panther Lake laptop if:
- You play PC games, even casually
- You rely on older, niche or company specific Windows software
- You want maximum compatibility with drivers and accessories
What People Are Saying
Beyond professional reviews, we looked at what buyers and enthusiasts are discussing in tech forum comments and community compatibility guides. These are opinions from real users, not lab tests, so treat them as extra context rather than hard facts.
Many users want better games support, not more CPU power
When Qualcomm announced the X2 lineup, a common reaction in GSMArena’s comments was that CPU speed is already good enough and what people really want is stronger graphics, better x86 app compatibility and a blanket fix for anti cheat. Another commenter complained that Snapdragon laptops often cost as much as a MacBook Air. (Source)
Check your games before you buy
Community compatibility guides recommend checking each game you play against the Works on WoA database and recent Reddit reports before buying a Snapdragon laptop, because support varies a lot from title to title. Games like Valorant and Destiny 2 remain blocked. (Source)
Panther Lake owners mostly talk about battery life
On the Intel side, the conversation is less about compatibility and more about how long these laptops last. Enthusiast testing like Hardware Canucks’ 43 hour light browsing result on a Panther Lake XPS 14 surprised many people who assumed only Arm and Apple chips could do that. (Source)
The common advice
The advice from users is consistent. If your day is browser, Office and video calls, a Snapdragon X2 Elite laptop is a great choice. If you game, use niche software or do not want to check compatibility lists, buy Panther Lake.
